Ask any college student if they need extra money and the answer will be a resounding: “Yes!” Did you know students with financial need can earn extra money through Federal Work-Study (FWS) program? Federal Work-Study provides undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to work part-time in a job that relates to the recipient’s field of study or community service. For many, Federal Work-Study helps offset the cost of college by allowing them to earn extra money to help pay for their educational expenses while gaining valuable experience.
Federal Work-Study is a form of financial aid. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and check the box for Federal Work-Study to be considered.
If you’re an undergraduate, you will be paid by the hour. No FWS student may be paid by commission or fee. The College must pay you directly (unless you direct otherwise) and at least monthly.
Wages for the FWS program must equal at least the current federal minimum wage but might be higher, depending on the type of work you do, and the skills required. The amount you earn can’t exceed your total FWS award. When assigning work hours, your employer and financial aid counselor will consider your award amount, your class schedule and your academic progress. As a student, you must maintain a cumulative GPA of no less than a 2.0 by the end of each semester.
