Vaughn College continued the development of its athletic and student affairs departments today with the promotion of Jon Hochberg to director of athletics, recreation and student services.

Hochberg1Hochberg, the college’s first-ever athletic director, also will coach the men’s basketball team in 2011-2012, succeeding Amy Mulligan.

Hochberg, 37, is the former head women’s basketball coach at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., where he compiled a record of 106-39 (.731 winning percentage) over five seasons. His 2009 team won the Empire 8 Conference tournament and qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament.

“I am honored, and humbled, to be selected as Vaughn College’s first director of athletics,” Hochberg said. “Athletics can have such a positive impact on the student body and the overall campus, and I’m excited to build a tradition of athletics that the Vaughn community can be proud of.”

Hochberg was hired as an admissions counselor at the College in September 2010. In his new position he will report to Vice President of Student Affairs John F. Agnelli III.

Before his five years at Stevens, Hochberg was an assistant coach of the women’s basketball team at Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y. and an assistant at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica.

Vaughn’s men’s basketball team has qualified for the Hudson Valley Men’s Athletic Conference (HVMAC) playoffs in each of the past two seasons. It finished the 2010-2011 season with a 12-12 record. The College is exploring the possibility of NCAA competition in the future.

“We are delighted to have someone as qualified as Jon heading up the athletics department at Vaughn,” Agnelli said. “He has a wonderful resume of accomplishment as a coach and we know he will be an asset as we consider a transition to NCAA competition.”
