Vaughn College Visits PS127 for STEM Day

September 24, 2026

Earlier this year, Dr. Benbelkacem and Vaughn College students paid a visit to PS127 – The Aerospace and Science Magnet School in East Elmhurst, Queens, NY. Students were briefed on science and engineering topics to introduce them to a STEM program that will run during the 2026-2027 school year, supported by a JetBlue grant for the girls at PS127. The aim is to empower students, including young women, to envision themselves in successful careers, with a focus on breaking down barriers for all students.

More than 160 middle schoolers gathered in the school’s auditorium to watch various drones. Dr. Benbelkacem explained engineering design and its applications, then discussed drones and their uses in the city and beyond. Vaughn students held a live demonstration on how to design a decorated cup with hot chocolate and marshmallows. Students participated in suggesting shapes, colors and background. Then, students watched a live demonstration on how to code a path for a drone to follow, and the uncrewed aerial vehicle team showed their work as they prepare for drone competitions.
