News stations from across the New York City area were present at Vaughn on July 22 to learn about the newly approved Enhanced Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI). Instructors and students enrolled in the air traffic control programs were present to showcase the system and provide on-site interviews. On media day, the following news outlets were on campus: CBS-NY, FOX 5, PIX11, Newsday, Queens Latino, Airport Voice and TRT World, and WETM (NBC-Elmira) also ran the PIX11 segment.

CBS investigative reporter Tim McNicholas spoke with Vaughn President Dr. Sharon B. DeVivo about how equipment changes due to be implemented in a massive overhaul by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the coming years will address recent equipment failures and how it impacts Vaughn College.

“As the federal government decides on the new equipment and what it’s going to look like, we hope these changes start in New York which will provide plentiful opportunities in the area for our graduates to learn and operate the new equipment and technology,” said DeVivo.

When McNicholas asked aviation management major Elvira Pereyaslov ’27 what she liked about air traffic control, she expressed excitement for being apart of the solution to aviation’s biggest challenge today. CBS News segment ran twice during the evening news at 5 p.m. Click here to watch CBS Segment.

In another interview with PIX11, journalist John Muller spoke with retired air traffic controller and Vaughn Instructor Steve Fanno on what the FAA can do to prevent massive delays and cancellations similar to the problems Newark Liberty International Airport faced earlier this year. Fanno said they’re pursuing a modernization of the system which should help them relieve some of the controller workload and stress. The PIX11 news segment ran six times during the evening news, Wednesday morning and over the weekend. Click here to watch PIX11 Segment.

FOX 5 aired its coverage on Thursday, July 24, twice on Friday, and twice the following day. Click here to watch the first segment, and here to watch the second segment.
