
Vaughn College Celebrates Class of 2025 at 93rd Commencement Ceremony
On May 17th, more than 300 graduates and their families gathered in the Westchester County Center to celebrate the Class of 2025 at the College’s 93rd commencement ceremony. Dr. Paul LaVergne, vice president of academic affairs, kicked off the event with a warm welcome to all attendees and introduced the student speaker Matthan Mbanefo.
Mbanefo was honored with the prestigious Board of Trustees award in recognition for his exceptional academic accomplishments and dedicated service to the institution. In his speech, he urged his fellow students to remember where they came from and the pride, honor and responsibility that comes with being a Vaughn College alumni.
Theresa M. Claiborne, the first Black woman pilot in the United States Air Force and retired United Airlines Capt., delivered the commencement address and received an honorary degree for her pioneering spirit, service to her country and inspiring the next generation, including Vaughn students. During her speech, she emphasized trusting in oneself, rising above and blazing new trails.
Providing advice, she had received from a mentor during her career she noted, “In navigating life remember no matter how cloudy the surface, you will rise above,” encouraged Claiborne. “The sky was never the limit. You are trailblazers ready to take your place to keep the world moving forward.”
President Dr. Sharon B. DeVivo concluded the ceremony with congratulations to the graduates and encouraged them to stay connected as Vaughn alumni.
