Former National Transportation Safety Board member John Goglia is teaching “Current Topics in Aviation” at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology this fall.

Goglia has more than 30 years of experience in aviation and was the first NTSB board member to hold a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aircraft mechanic’s certificate. He will be assisted in the classroom by attorney and aviation legal expert Loretta Alkalay.

Goglia has played a key role in focusing international attention on the significance of aircraft maintenance in aviation accidents. He has participated in multiple air, rail and bus accident investigations and chaired the NTSB’s public hearings on the 1996 ValuJet crash into the Florida Everglades.

The course, which meets Fridays from 1:30 to 3:20 p.m., covers topics such as outsourced maintenance, passenger safety, the impact of fatigue on air traffic controllers, pilots and mechanics, and more. Students explore these issues and the difficulties faced by industry and regulatory agencies, including behind-the-scenes views of how the FAA, NTSB and other agencies interact and how that affects aviation safety.
