Engineering About Gears Logo

The mechanical engineering bachelor of science (BS) degree program will provide students with a strong foundation in engineering analysis and design, the knowledge and experience in analytical computational and experimental methods, and the ability to evaluate these approaches for use in a given practical situation with hands-on technical projects.

Students will be introduced to the reliability and safety analysis of engineering components, which are an integral part of the design process of the curriculum. Technical computer-aided engineering courses (such as Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application (CATIA), Patran-Nastran, Engineering Analysis with MATLAB, and Finite Element Analysis with MATLAB) are developed in the program to satisfy the need of engineering industries, as well as to provide our students with the knowledge and technology to design and evaluate the components of an engineering system. Graduates will be well-qualified to obtain positions in any engineering industry.

This degree will provide students with a strong foundation in engineering mechanics, mathematics, computer-aided design and fundamentals of engineering. It will also provide them with knowledge and experience in analytical, computational, and experimental methods, and the ability to design and evaluate these approaches for use in practical situations.

Mechanical engineering is one of the highest demand engineering disciplines in the industry. Given the rapid pace of technological change, mechanical engineers need to develop a mind-set to adapt to changes in technology and prepare themselves for the future challenges.

Today, mechanical engineers are employed in a wide variety of engineering fields for a wide range of tasks, such as structural analysis, engineering design, HVAC, engineering reliability, vibration analysis, fluid-dynamics, computer-aided design, automation engineering, and robotics, to name a few.

Career possibilities afforded to graduates of this program include application engineer, quality assurance engineer, electrical controls engineer, mechanical designer, HVAC engineer, control systems engineer, structural engineer, and mechanical engineer.

Potential internships and employers for graduates include: Embraer, Cummins Inc., Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman Corp, Toyota, Pall Corp, Sikorsky Aircraft, US Military, Consolidated Edison, NASA, Samsung, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Vaughn College’s career services department employs a variety of tools to assist students and alumni in their development as professionals. The department meets and communicates with individuals through appointments, e-mail and phone conversations, providing information, editing and reviewing resumes and helping with the job and internship search process. It implements weekly workshops on resume writing, interviewing skills and job fair etiquette. It organizes job fairs in the fall and spring, each with 40-plus companies, and a graduate school fair in the winter.

The department also networks with companies on behalf of Vaughn students for job and internship opportunities. It manages a private job board website, Vaughn Career Connect, where students and alumni can post resumes and apply for positions. Employers registered on the site can post jobs as well as search and review student and alumni resumes for potential candidates for open positions. For more information on career opportunities visit Vaughn career connect here.

Vaughn is in the borough of Queens—one of the five boroughs in New York City—and the most diverse county in the country. Minutes from campus are “Little India” in Jackson Heights, the great Greek and Italian restaurants of Astoria, and the bustling Chinese markets of Flushing. Want more? The excellent museums, nightlife and cultural events of Manhattan are just a short commute away.

Outside the classroom, Vaughn students get together, work together and have fun together in student clubs, professional societies, honor societies, and in intercollegiate athletics. Whether you live in the residence hall at Vaughn College or commute, there’s always something to do on campus. Grab a bite to eat with friends in the cafe. Work out at the fitness center. Watch the College’s many sports teams play. The Vaughn Warriors compete in men’s and women’s basketball, tennis, and cross country; and men’s soccer and baseball as a part of the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

You can also join one of the College’s many student clubs or professional societies. From the Hispanic Society of Aeronautical Engineering, Veterans Organization, and Society for Women Engineers, to the Robotics, Drone and Gaming clubs, this campus has a way for you to find a new interest or pursue a passion.
