The aeronautical sciences bachelor of science degree provides students with the flexibility to incorporate flight qualifications with academic studies. You can also explore other career opportunities in the aviation, management and technology fields by obtaining a foundation in flight dispatch, air traffic control and airfield operations. Our forward-thinking approach allows for training in areas relevant to achieving career success in a variety of professions.

The mission of the Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Sciences program is to produce graduates who have the complete technical knowledge to pursue a career as a commercial pilot, with the opportunity to complete one of the following options:

  • Air Traffic Control (Under the FAA CTI program)
  • Flight dispatch certification

Vaughn’s location, adjacent to world-class LaGuardia Airport, provides a learning environment unsurpassed in terms of activities, resources and personnel in aviation.

Graduates from this degree can obtain two or more Federal Aviation Administration certificates as a flight dispatcher and as a ground instructor for basic flight and instrument pilots. Students who begin flight training in the associate or bachelor’s program in aircraft operations but decide to pursue a different career path can easily transfer their existing credits to the aeronautical sciences degree.

You will take a variety of courses that will prepare you for an aviation career. Students will to investigate first-hand the areas of aeronautical technology, air traffic control, human factors, accident investigation, airline procedures, aviation safety and crew resource management.

An overview of aviation will allow the student to gain an appreciation of the complexities of the field of aeronautics. Course content includes historical background, aeronautical technology, the social and economic impact of aerospace, and future developments and government regulation.

The flight review courses will review and evaluate students’ flight operations during general flight training, explanation and discussion of specific tasks, procedures and maneuvers, in which pilot competency must be obtained and demonstrated as per FAA regulations and Vaughn College standards.

Vaughn College’s career services department employs a variety of tools to assist students and alumni in their development as professionals. The department meets and communicates with individuals through appointments, e-mail and phone conversations, providing information, editing and reviewing resumes and helping with the job and internship search process. It implements weekly workshops on resume writing, interviewing skills and job fair etiquette. It organizes job fairs in the fall and spring, each with 40-plus companies, and a graduate school fair in the winter.

The department also networks with companies on behalf of Vaughn students for job and internship opportunities. It manages a private job board website, Vaughn Career Connect, where students and alumni can post resumes and apply for positions. Employers registered on the site can post jobs as well as search and review student and alumni resumes for potential candidates for open positions. Vaughn is in the borough of Queens—one of the five boroughs in New York City—and the most diverse county in the country. Minutes from campus are “Little India” in Jackson Heights, the great Greek and Italian restaurants of Astoria, and the bustling Chinese markets of Flushing. Want more? Outside the classroom, Vaughn students get together, work together and have fun together in student clubs, professional societies, honor societies, and in intercollegiate athletics. Whether you live in the residence hall at Vaughn College or commute, there’s always something to do on campus. Grab a bite to eat with friends in the cafe. Work out at the fitness center. Watch the College’s many sports teams play. The Vaughn Warriors compete in men’s and women’s basketball, tennis, and cross country; and men’s soccer and baseball as a part of the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

From the Hispanic Society of Aeronautical Engineering, Veterans Organization, and Society for Women Engineers, to the Robotics, Drone and Gaming clubs, this campus has a way for you to find a new interest or pursue a passion.
