The office of academic support services has a number of support units available to students. These units consist of:
Academic Resource Center (ARC)
Pursuing an education requires time and commitment, and there are many occasions when extra academic help and support are needed. The ARC is designed for just those occasions. The center offers a variety of services, including peer tutoring, computer tutorials, audio/video aides, reference textbooks, English as a second language (ESL), remediation library, and a quiet study area. These services help students improve academic performance and supplement their education. All Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology students are encouraged to take advantage of the support services available at the ARC.
Assessment Center
The assessment center, located in the Academic Resource Center (ARC), in cooperation with the admissions office, handles the testing and placement of all incoming students. Appointments for taking the "Accuplacer" test for English and math course placements are made through academic support services.
Aviation Outreach Program (AOP)
As part of academic support services, the aviation outreach program aims to increase the number of prepared students that enter college and improve participation and performance, specifically in mathematics, science, and technology. Community involvement, networking, and outreach are a vital part of the program.
The Bridge Program
Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, in affiliation with Aviation High School, offers Advanced Placement courses in science and mathematics for students to earn college credits. The program includes extensive student counseling and support for the transition from high school to college. Each semester, the College offers courses in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. Courses are offered on location in select New York City high schools as well as on Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology Campus. High school students interested in the BRIDGE program should contact Thomas Bracken, Associate Director of Admissions at 718.429.6600, extension 167, tbracken@vaughn.edu.
Computer-Aided Instruction
Computer-aided instruction offers students a self-help program using computers. Software packages include topics such as computer-aided drafting, computer-aided developmental mathematics, English, and English as a second language. Each package contains programs at various levels of difficulty. Computer-aided instruction enables students to expand their knowledge and understanding of a particular subject, or simply to get help with course studies and assignments. Audio-Visual Library Instructional tapes covering mathematics, science, English and a variety of aviation and aerospace-related subjects are available for individual and small-group viewing in the ARC screening section. They range from general aeronautical information to more specific, detailed topics. The viewing of these tapes may be required for some classes.
Computer-Aided Writing
Assistance and technical support for writing is available at the ARC. With the aid of word processors and desktop publishing software packages, students can learn up-to-date formats and methods of presenting written material while gaining experience using computers.
Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP)
Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology participates in the New York State Education Department's Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). This program has been designed for educationally and economically disadvantaged New York state residents who otherwise might not be able to attend college. HEOP provides several academic and financial support services to assist students. These services include the summer immersion program, tutorial services, counseling services and financial assistance.
Middle-School Mentoring Program
Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology students, in partnership with PS 127 and MS 391, tutor middle-school students to enhance their interest in mathematics and science.
Peer Tutorial Program
Students who need tutoring in various subjects have the option of turning to their peers for extra help. Peer tutors work with their fellow students on a one-to-one basis at a mutually convenient time. Periodic meetings are held between the student and the director of the ARC to track the student's progress and the overall effectiveness of the tutorial program.
Pre-Tech Summer Immersion Program
This is an intensive six-week summer program to introduce qualified "pre-freshmen" to fundamental math, science, technical and aviation-related concepts.
Program for Academic Success (PAS)
This program focuses on identifying the needs of students in terms of academic advisement, tutoring and counseling from the moment they are enrolled at the College. The primary objective of PAS is to boost retention of first-year degree and vocational students. Those who fully use these services enjoy, on average, a 0.9 increase in their grade point average after one semester.
Student Advisement Center (SAC)
The Student Advisement Center is an integral part of the academic support services at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. It is a center committed to fostering a SMART--Standardized method of Advising, Retaining and Training-driven environment that will enable our student body to flourish academically, personally and professionally. The SAC is designed to provide students with practical solutions, from the point of admission to graduation, in achieving academic success and maintaining matriculation.
Student Support Services Program (SSSP)
The Student Support Services Program (SSSP) is an integral part of the academic support services available at the College. The SSSP is designed to offer academic, educational and motivational support to a select group of students. With a dedicated staff of counselors, advisors, tutors and peer mentors, the SSSP helps students meet the challenge of achieving academic excellence with tutoring, academic skills classes, counseling, financial planning assistance, career information, workshops and a forum within which to address personal questions. The SSSP offers a friendly environment where students can become part of a goal-oriented team, committed to ensuring that their educational goals become reality. Students are eligible if they come from a family with low income, are the first in their family to go to college, have academic needs or physical disabilities, and are a citizen or permanent resident of the US.
Summer Institute
This four-week program introduces eligible middle school and high school students to the world of aviation and college life.
Upward Bound Program
Upward Bound is a federal TRIO program funded by the US Department of Education, which is distributed to institutions through competitive grants. TRIO programs help students overcome social and cultural barriers to higher education. Upward Bound serves disadvantaged, first-generation and low-income high school students. The purpose of the Upward Bound Program is to motivate high school students and to help them gain important skills necessary for success beyond high school. This program encourages and addresses the needs required to successfully complete high school and postsecondary education. Upward Bound is the type of program that will provide academic, social and cultural experiences during the high school years, which will greatly increase the probability of students enrolling in college and graduating from college.
Workshops
Members of the faculty and staff conduct mini-lectures (workshop formats) geared towards the student and college life throughout the academic year. These lectures are not a part of the general curriculum. They cover topics such as studying effectively and time management.
