Vaughn Library Grows Toward the Future
February 19, 2014
Librarian and Associate Professor Jo Ann Jayne has seen her share of changes at the Vaughn College library over her 40-year tenure. From the addition of VHS tapes and later DVDs and Blu-ray discs, to the expansion of digital publications, Jayne has watched the future unfold on campus. And now, with the College's major campuswide renovation underway, she is seeing the latest evolution of the library — a larger, one-stop educational resource that will offer access to books, digital resources and movies while providing Vaughn's students a place to relax while studying, complete with study rooms and a café nook.
"This will be a place where students can feel comfortable, where they can come to unwind," says Jayne. "This is their space; it's their library."
Once construction is complete, the library and Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) will double the size of the existing library, and will be moving to its permanent home on Vaughn's main campus, complete with designated areas for books and printed periodicals, conference tables for group projects and a café area, where students can have a cup of coffee or tea while they study. Jayne hopes the new location will make the library more accessible to Vaughn students.
Vaughn has recently added two databases to its registry, increasing the library's e-book offerings from 88,000 to over 98,500. The new databases, AccessEngineering and Books 24/7, offer ebooks and journal articles on the subjects of engineering and business. All Vaughn students can access the databases from the Vaughn website, using the same login information they use on the portal site.
"When we moved to the Annex building, it wasn't easy for students to access the library's resources. But soon we'll be in a central location on campus, and students can find the books, movies and simulators they require without having to travel from main campus."
Vaughn's new library is scheduled to be complete in spring 2014.
