Vaughn Hosts Day for High School Guidance Counselors
March 30, 2011
Vaughn College opened its doors to 43 high school guidance counselors from 29 schools Wednesday (March 30) in an informational reception that included lunch, campus tours and flight simulator demonstrations.
Some counselors came from nearby, including Janet Brown and Nori Cerny of Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington. Others came from as far away as Connecticut and New Jersey, eager for a glimpse of what the College has to offer.
"I'm running back right now for a student," Cerny said. "This is exactly what he wants, it's perfect for him, and he doesn't even know it yet."
Counselor attendance exceeded last year's total. College President Dr. John Fitzpatrick opened the event with a message that continued all afternoon — that progressive things are happening at Vaughn.
"We're a college on the move," Dr. Fitzpatrick said. "Welcome."
A media presentation, small-group discussion and question-and-answer session preceded personalized tours of the campus. Counselors also chatted with members of Vaughn's award-winning robotics club, which later this month will compete in the 2011 Vex Robotics World Championships near Orlando, Fla.
After a five-minute flight simulator experience, Brown, mother of a Coast Guard helicopter pilot, marveled at the scope of opportunities at Vaughn.
"I'm seeing all the different sides of the aviation industry," Brown said. "And that Vaughn offers more than just aviation degrees. I'm seeing a whole variety of programs that are appealing to kids."
