Vaughn College Again Named As First-Tier Regional College

September 12, 2013

For the fourth year in a row, Vaughn College has been named among the first-tier, top regional colleges in the North, receiving its highest ranking to date.  The U.S. News & World Report 2013 survey rankings again recognized Vaughn as one of the best regional colleges from Maine to Maryland. The results were released September 10.

"The continued advancement of the College on this list is evidence of the commitment and dedication of the faculty and staff and the ongoing achievements made by our students," said President Dr. John C. Fitzpatrick.

In this year's survey, Vaughn ranked first in the nation in its category for campus ethnic diversity and tied the top regional university, St. Peters, for the distinction. Vaughn is a federally designated Hispanic-serving institution. The College also ranked three out of 46 colleges for the high percentage (75 percent) of undergraduate students receiving Pell Grants and ranked 18 out of 62 schools for highest graduation rates for regional colleges in the North.

"Vaughn is known for providing financial assistance to its students to help them achieve their dream of obtaining a college education," said Fitzpatrick. "Ninety percent of our applicants receive some form of financial aid and the College offers the assistance students need to finish their education, obtain practical degrees and become highly employable."

U.S. News & World Report began its annual rankings of American colleges and universities in 1983. As in years past, it used more than a dozen indicators to score its 2013 choices, including undergraduate academic reputation, faculty resources, student selectivity, graduation rates, freshman retention rates and alumni giving. Rankings were based on a weighted evaluation of all categories.

In Vaughn's North category were more than 60 regional colleges, defined as those schools that concentrate on undergraduate education and award fewer than half their degrees in liberal arts. Among the schools in Vaughn's group were Cooper Union and the United States Coast Guard Academy.
