Vaughn College will partner with Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in a research and development project designed to produce a wholly digital flight-quality legacy sand casting process. The project will convert two-dimensional 1960s casting into a three-dimensional format using CATIA (Computer-Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application) V5 technology.
The initial phase of the project will pair two Vaughn College senior-standing students from the engineering and technology department with a strong background in CATIA V5 with a project manager from RCM Technology, which shares a business relationship with Sikorsky. Students will travel to RCM's headquarters in Shelton, Conn. two days a week for about four months.
"These types of real-world engineering projects will provide our students with a greater appreciation for engineering education and expand their hands-on and career-building experiences," Dr. Hossein Rahemi, chair of the engineering and technology departments, said.
