Find Journal Articles

The library subscribes to databases that contain more than 8,000 full-text periodicals and newspapers. Back issues of hard copies are no longer kept. If you need an article from a periodical go to the research databases. Only Vaughn students, faculty and staff will be able to access the research databases. You will be asked to sign in; type in your email address and password. Then click on 'Serials Solutions'. From this point you can search for a specific periodical by title, a subject, or a specific database.

To search by title you can either type the title in the space provided or click on the letter representing the title you are searching for.

To search by subject go to 'Browse e-journals by subject' and open the drop-down menu. Click on the subject you are searching for. Click on 'search'. This will take you to a list of subject headings. Click on the subject heading of your choice. A list of journals and the databases that they are located in will appear. Click on the database to get to your article.

To search using a specific database click on the database list under 'Search for keywords in e-journals'.

Find Books

The library catalog contains all books, manuals, periodicals, videos, and computer software owned by the library. There are two computers located in the library that can be used for this purpose. An item can be searched by author, title, subject, keyword, series, or call number. After finding the item, copy the call number. Items without a sublocation designation are 'regular' and are located in the open stacks area of the library. Items denoted as 'reference' are located under the windows. These items do not circulate and must be used in the library. Items marked 'reserve' must be requested at the circulation desk.

Vaughn Library uses the Library of Congress cataloging system. Books are arranged by their call numbers. The first line of the call number is a letter; on the second line there is a number; the third line has a letter-number combination; and the fourth line (if there is one) also has a letter-number combination. Books are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically by number. If you have a problem locating an item, ask anyone at the circulation desk for assistance.

Cite Sources

There are five citation styles that can be used for research papers. Ask each professor which style he/she wants you to use. If they have no preference, you can use any one of the following guidelines:

  • APA: social sciences
  • MLA: humanities, literature, and arts
  • AMA: biological sciences, medicine, and health
  • Turabian: for use with all subjects
  • Chicago: for use with all subjects that are non-scholarly publications
Hardcopy style manuals are kept in the reserve area in the library. You can use the following links to access information on the above styles. For citing internet resources try the following site: If you are still unsure how to proceed, try a citation generator. Just click on the type of resource you need cited, fill in the information about your resource and click! Your citation will be set up for you!
