Distance Education-Teleconferencing FAQ's

What is distance education?
Distance education is a practice that links instructors, students and resources in differing geographic locations using learning technologies.

How does the College use distance learning?
Instructors, based at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, broadcast their lessons using video and web technology to reach a variety of corporate sites around the country or using the Internet to reach students in various locations.

How does the teleconferencing class work?
In the teleconference classes, video and audio communication is maintained throughout. The professor can view all sites simultaneously and hear all students as well. Technology systems such as Tandberg or Polycom systems are used. The individual classes can see and hear the instructor, and at the same time hear students from the various other sites.

How long is each course?
Teleconferencing courses run for 12 weeks in the Fall, Spring and Summer

Accelerated six-week sessions are held each summer.

When are classes scheduled?
Teleconferencing classes are conveniently scheduled around the company work shifts. Prior to the second shift, and immediately following the first shift. Class times currently are 11:30 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and 4 to 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time

When do semesters begin?
Teleconference class semesters begin in September and January.

What about textbooks?
Textbooks are available online at many booksellers, including Barnes and Noble.com. The College bookstore also provides books and takes phone/credit card orders. Books are shipped directly to your home usually within two to three days. The bookstore phone number is 1.866.6VAUGHN, extension 153.

What happens if my company requires me to travel while class is in session?
The College understands that many working students are not able to attend every teleconference class due to certain business demands. The College enables the student to continue studying by providing DVD's or videotape copies of the individual classes. Requests for tapes should be made prior to the travel schedule. Students should expect taped classes to be provided within one week of request. In this way, students can keep current with course requirements.

What about transfer credit?
The College will individually evaluate each new student to determine transfer credit that may be applied. The student must provide to the College an official transcript from all previous institutions. Additional technical and military certifications should also be forwarded to the institution.

Are student services available?
Distance students are afforded the same services as the on-campus students, including access to academic counseling and advisement, library and career placement services.
